Tri-Lakes Silver Alliance Year in Review

Tri-Lakes Silver Alliance Year in Review

2020 was certainly a year few of us will forget! The impact of the coronavirus on Tri-Lakes Silver Alliance and Senior Center members was unprecedented - as a board it was not a scenario with which we had ever thought we’d be dealing.

Our 2020 goals were:

  • to expand activities and offerings at the Senior center
  • to implement MySeniorCenter software and hardware
  • to identify and analyze new build/renovation options for our 2025 vision of a new Senior Center
  • to prepare for fundraising

In January and February, we were working towards these goals by collaborating with the Town of Monument, D-38, El Paso County leaders, Mount Carmel, the Area on Aging, Monument Police Department, and Colorado Palliative and Hospice, by purchasing the hardware and software package. The coronavirus upended all these efforts in the middle of March causing us to close the Senior Center and the Thrift Store to comply with the State of Colorado “Stay at Home and Safer at Home” mandates.

During this time, we looked for ways to continue to engage and serve the Tri-Lakes community. We partnered with Home Town Food Service to provide a food order option that allowed seniors to limit their exposure and avoid grocery stores and still have access to reasonably priced fresh food.

The Thrift Store reopened on May 11th and has been receiving numerous donations of gently used items and the Senior Center safely resumed activities on a limited basis July 1st. We could never have survived all of this without the support of our amazing volunteers. Even with the coronavirus, volunteers organized and led activities, and operated the Thrift Store and food ordering. Thank you to each of you who made this possible!

At the end of September, we started a new community partnership with the Children’s Literacy Center and are looking for other partner opportunities that serve our senior community and allow us to achieve that balance of providing services while limiting exposure to coronavirus.

In terms of our 2025 vision of a new Senior Center, we have created a separate Senior Center of the Future account at Integrity Bank and Trust to help us plan for the future. As you tax plan for 2020, please consider donating to Tri-Lakes Silver Alliance. IRA required minimum distributions can go directly to a 501(c)(3) without being taxed.

Have a healthy and safe holiday season!
